The name of the village originates from its position at the foot of the Puy Maurenc ("cros" means "dip" in Occitan).
The village is located on the border between the Carladès and Châtaigneraie areas famous for its chestnut trees. The acid soil around the village is indeed very well suited to the growth of chestnut trees. Sadly, those that have been planted in the village aren’t really looked after but you can still admire a magnificent drying house for chestnuts known as a secadou.
